Haywood was formed in 1808 from Buncombe County, which was formed in 1791 from parts of Burke and Rutherford counties. Macon County will be reduced in size beginning in 1839 by forming Cherokee Co., (note that Clay will be formed from part of Cherokee) followed by the formation of Jackson Co. in 1861 (formed from part of Macon and part of Haywood), then again in 1871 for the formation of Swain Co.
